Expenditures for the month included some classroom grants, some curriculum support activities, faculty and staff appreciation, and the Pacific Science Center Van visit. The van visit expense was higher than budgeted. Balance on hand is $25,459.93.
Staff Report: Brian Moore/Dee Baumgartner
* WASL testing started today. The tests are shorter, and there are less testing days. The future of WASL is back on the table.
* The school is in the middle of “Pig Out on Books,” which concentrates on reading for all students. The theme this year is the letter “P” with everything starting with that letter. Pig Out happened later this year, which the primary teachers liked because their students have more reading skills under their belt. An assembly is planned for Friday, April 24. Piñatas are planned.
* Friday, April 17, is family movie night. The original version of the “Charlotte’s Web” movie will be shown to coincide with the Pig Out theme. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Popcorn and water will be provided. This activity is paid with the last of a community grant from WEA.
* Upcoming activities: May 4-8 is 5th Grade Camp; Dino Dig for 2nd Graders; Mom’s Night which will feature a soup and salad dinner for moms and craft activities; author coming in May 22. The school newsletter will be coming out every two weeks in order to over communicate with parents as there are a lot of upcoming events.
Committee Reports
* Budget Committee: A planning meeting is set for Friday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m. in the Library Classroom. Chairs need to have their budget information turned in by this date so appropriate allocations can be made for next year.
* Science Fair: Julie Tarlyn read Mary Bohlscheid’s report. She said the fair was a huge success because of our excellent volunteers and student projects. There were about 60 volunteers, 200 projects, and 245 students who participated which amounted to an 80% participation rate. Costs were about $453.43, which included expenses for medals and ribbons, review cards, thank you cards, and postage. The winner of this year’s most interesting science project went to Bjorn Knoblauch. His name was added to a plaque, and he will be presented with a $25 gift certificate to Lick’s. A parent had suggested that the PTA purchase some tri-fold display boards that could be supplied to each student for their science project in order to make set-up easier. It was recommended that Mary investigate the matter further and negotiate a purchase price with either Office Depot or Staples.
* Greenhouse: Dawn Lupkes reported that greenhouse activities started this week with 87 students coming through the first time. More of the older grades came in than had in the past. Peas were planted. Greenhouse activities take place on Thursdays during lunch recess. Next week they will be doing a “beans in a bag” experiment.
* Ice Cream Social: Jason MacConnell reported that 16 5-quart tubs of ice cream were purchased for the social, which were 5 more than last year. All ice cream was distributed. Dissmore’s gave us a great deal on the ice cream and cones, so it only cost $85.90 for everything. Jason said that more ice cream scoopers are needed. It was recommended that Jason purchase the scoops with this year’s budget since he still has money, and that they be put in the PTA closet with notes made for next year’s chair to that effect.
Special Order
Election of 2009-2010 officers was conducted by secret, written ballot. Fourteen ballots were returned and the following officers were elected:
Co-Presidents Julie Tarlyn and Brenda Martin
Vice-President Liz Grimes
Treasurer Dawn Lupkes
Secretary Ann Schwendimann
New Business
* Constance Sprott said in the past a sheet of dry good materials has been included with the cookie dough flyer. Red Apple won’t guarantee we’ll get that sheet in next year’s materials. She asked for members to look at a sheet of wrapping paper samples she had and give her feedback on them in case she has to do that instead.
Announcements
* A thank-you card was received from Mrs. Inaba. She gave a gift of $100 to the PTA.
* Effie Felsted, a second grader, was a state Reflections winner in the visual arts category.
* All chairs need to prepare their chair/event planning forms and turn them in with their chair folders to the PTA box.
* Child care will be provided for the May 12 meeting. Participation at that meeting was encouraged as it is normally a lightly attended meeting.
* Nominations are needed for the Golden Acorn award. Forms are due by April 24.
* Amy Tull will be gone next month so this is her last meeting. She thanked everyone for the opportunity to serve. She is sorry to leave and will miss Franklin.
* Next newsletter submissions are due April 27.
Adjournment
Amy Tull adjourned the meeting at 7:35 p.m.
