Running Start
What is Running Start?
Running Start is a program that allows qualified high school juniors and seniors to take college courses on college campuses and earn dual credit for them (high school credit and college credit). This is a tuition-free program in the state of Washington. At PHS Running Start works in two different ways: Through WSU and through Community College.
Who is eligible to participate in Running Start?
Every Running Start student must:
**Be at least a junior in high school
**Have an admission index number (a combination of GPA and SAT or ACT scores) of 60 or higher
**Complete the high school procedures regarding Running Start
**Have permission from the principal or guidance counselor
**Have courses approved by both the high school counselor and WSU advisor
**Submit the Running Start application, transcript, and test scores to WSU
How does the program work?
You attend regular college classes during the fall and/or spring semesters. When you have completed the course(s) successfully, college credit is granted. You are encouraged to contact any college or university that you are interested in attending after high school to find out how these credits might tansfer to them. The credit you earn is also applied toward your high school graduation requirements. Every three credit course that you take through Running Start will transfer as one credit to PHS. Your academic records from college coursework are maintained by WSU or the community college you take your course at and a semester grade report will be sent to PHS.
How much does it cost?
As a Running Start student you do not pay college tuition--the state of Washington does that for you. However, you do need to pay for books, supplies, placement examination fees, special course fees, and any other necessary fees. You will also have to provide your own transportation to and from the course location.
Academic Standards
Running Start students must adhere to the university's or community college's Academic Standards Policy. Students must maintain a 2.50 GPA each semester in their college work or be subject to the college's probation procedures.
What classes will I be able to take?
Your high school counselor, and a college advisor (at WSU or community college) will help you choose courses that will help you to meet your academic goals. Most of the courses you will take will be at the freshmen or sophomore level (100-200 level courses). These courses will provide you with the foundation upon which to build other college coursework. Consult your counselor or Running Start advisor at the college to discuss courses and scheduling.
