CHOIR NEWS
SEWMEA Solo/Small Ensemble Festival~ Our Southeast region’s 2010 Solo/Small Ensemble Music Festival, open to all public school music students in the Southeast region of Washington, will be hosted by Mrs. James (Lincoln MS Choir) and Mrs. DeWitt (Pullman HS Band) at Lincoln Middle School in Pullman. The event will take place on Saturday, February6th from 9:00am to 3:00pm and will feature middle school and high school student musicians. Each performer will receive a personal adjudication and rating from a respected expert in the performer’s area of study. High school students receiving a “Superior” rating will have the opportunity to compete at the state Solo/ Ensemble Festival in April. We have many vocal and instrumental students from LMS entered in the event, including one soloist, 7th grader Lily Thoren, and several small ensembles from the LMS 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir. We invite you to come out and support our performers, and enjoy some outstanding music along the way. All LMS 6th Grade Choir members are strongly encouraged to attend as audience. Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival~ The 2010 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is quickly approaching and our LMS 7th & 8th Grade Advanced Jazz Combo is working hard to prepare for it. The Advanced Jazz Combo is entered in the Combo Division for this year’s festival. The festival will take place Thursday, February 25th for middle school participants and is an all day event. During the day students will have the opportunity to perform, hear other school ensembles and young soloists perform, and may have the opportunity to sit in on clinics given by various jazz artists that also perform at the festival. Due to this great opportunity to learn more about jazz, the LMS 6th Grade Jazz Combo is also invited to attend the festival. Their day will be filled with jazz music. This year we also have one LMS student, 7th grader Lily Thoren, performing in the Vocal Solo Division. Good luck jazz students! WMEA Youth Honor Choir & Junior All-State Concert 2010~ One LMS 6th Grade Choir student, Amanda Emerson, and two LMS 8th Grade Choir students, Lucina Perez and Jen Van Allen, will participate in the Washington Music Educators Association’s Youth Honor Choir and Junior AllState Concert on Saturday, February 13th. These students were selected to the choirs by audition this past December, and have been working on the six to seven honor pieces they will perform at the concert. Amanda Emerson will perform with the Youth Honor Choir, Lucina Perez will perform with the Junior All-State Treble Choir, and Jen Van Allen will perform with the Junior All-State Mixed Choir. The performance will take place at 4:15pm at The Capitol Theatre in Yakima, WA.

February - 2010
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
Lincoln Middle School Instrumental Music Program 2009-2010
February is a busy month for the instrumental music department! We hope parents will take advantage of coming to hear the performance opportunities this month. Saturday, February 6th is our regional solo and ensemble festival here at Lincoln Middle School. Students involved in this festival have been hard at work rehearsing their solos or small ensemble music. A schedule will be sent home closer to the event. Eighth graders who were accepted to Junior All-State will participate in that honor group this month, on February 13th in Yakima. We are very proud of all of the students who auditioned, they did an excellent job, and we know those students who were accepted will be wonderful ambassadors for Lincoln Middle School. February 25th is a big day for the Jazz Bands at LMS. That is the day of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Mr. Covill will send out more information about the Jazz Festival, such as schedule and information for anyone interested in chaperoning, closer to the event. Sixth grade Jazz Band starts this month! 6th grade Jazz Band will start on Friday, February 19 at 7:30am in the band room at LMS. We rehearse on Monday and Friday mornings from 7:30am to 8:15am. Percussionists need to purchase a pair of brushes. I will let them know what kind to get or you can check our website. Looking ahead, the 6th grade and 7th/8th grade Orchestra will have a concert Monday, March 1st at 7:30 pm in the LMS Commons. The PHS Orchestra and WSU string orchestra will also be performing on this concert. Please mark your calendars! Thank you for your support of your student in instrumental music at LMS. Remember to check the music department website: http://www.lmsmusic.org for up-to-date information for both the band and orchestra programs.
Thank you for your support of the LMS Instrumental Music Program!
From the Library…
As a public school librarian, I am constantly thinking about ways to better engage students with the world of the printed word. Believe me, with all the many technological and social diversions in our children's lives, that can indeed be a full-time job. Sometimes the realization that many kids will never know the joy and fulfillment reading can bring, the worlds it can open up, the comfort it can bring to a chaotic day, the knowledge that leads to understanding and growth, can actually hurt! It's at those low points that I have, thankfully, been able to renew my commitment to the challenge of finding just the right book that will give a student a taste of all those things books have offered me. And, when that doesn't seem to work, when the "right" book is returned unread, or the student has no interest in finding the next "right" book, I can easily put my faith in the fact that some of our greatest minds, our best writers, and some of our most successful leaders of business, society and government, also did not like to read when they were in middle or high school. So, what's a parent to do? 1. Let your children see you read. Novels, non-fiction, newspapers, magazines, work-related materials, whatever it might be, children become life-long readers more readily if they see it modeled at home. 2. Read with your children. Even though your child is middle school-aged, they can still benefit greatly from reading to you or their siblings or having you read to them. In fact, if you have a reluctant reader in your family, reading out loud the first couple of chapters of a book they bring home as homework or for pleasure will often spark their interest and motivate them to continue reading the story. It can also help them decide in a much more timely manner that they may need to get a different book either because the one they chose doesn't interest them or is too difficult or too easy. 3. Encourage your child to check out books from the library. Whether it is our school library, Neill Public Library, or any of the WSU libraries, children learn that they can enjoy books without having to purchase them. Is that so cool, or what?! 4. Give books as rewards or gifts. Showing your children that books are a treat not a punishment is very important. Does it matter what kind of book? I don't think so. Although I am not a fan of "graphic" novels, I have seen kids who do not enjoy reading picking those up and reading them. The same goes with cartoon books and magazines. As long as the content is age-appropriate and supports your family's values, let them read what they like. 5. Don't lose hope. As I said at the beginning, many successful individuals have developed the love of reading later in their lives—often when they no longer have to. In the meantime, the teachers at LMS and I will continue to look for just the right book that will open that limitless, wonderful world to them.
Mrs. Jovanovich
