Understand the FAFSA: Five New Videos to Help

The College Success Foundation understands that the FAFSA is a crucial step for students, so we worked with our school-based staff to create five short videos for students to provide FAFSA filing tips. CSF has teamed up with CollegeMapper.com (a free website that gives students a personalized plan for college admissions) to produce these videos. The Washboard is a free, web-based scholarship clearinghouse that matches Washington scholarship seekers with Washington scholarship providers. Over 80,000 scholarship seekers and 210 providers are registered. The Ron Brown Scholar Program Priority Deadline November 1, 2012, 2nd Deadline January 9, 2013
Seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. These scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. Applications are screened during the month of February by Ron Brown Scholar Program staff. In March, finalists are invited to participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the CAP Charitable Foundation. Finalists are interviewed by members of the Ron Brown Selection Committee and are expected to participate in several Selection Weekend activities. The contest challenges high school students to discover newprofiles in courage, and to therefore research and write about acts of politicalcourage that occurred after the publication of Kennedy's Profilesin Courage in 1956.

The winner of the competitiveannual contest is awarded a $10,000 prize and is invited to accept the award atthe Profile in Courage Award ceremony hosted each May by Caroline Kennedy atthe Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. The student’s nominatingteacher receives a John F. Kennedy Public Service Grant in the amount of $500and is also invited to attend the Profile in Courage Award ceremony. A secondplace winner receives $1,000 and up to five finalists each receive $500.

The Profile in Courage EssayContest meets several NationalStandards in Social Studies and English and offers a meaningful opportunityfor students to develop and enhance research, writing and critical thinkingskills while they deepen their understanding and appreciation of politics andhistory.

Topic Guidelines: Studentsare asked to write an original and creative essay of 1,000 words or less thatdemonstrates an understanding of politicalcourage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Studentsshould use at least five varied sources such as newspaper articles, books,and/or personal interviews, including one non-internet source, to address thefollowing topic:

The Ron Brown Scholar Program
- Deadline January 9, 2013
Seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. These scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. Applications are screened during the month of February by Ron Brown Scholar Program staff. In March, finalists are invited to participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the CAP Charitable Foundation. Finalists are interviewed by members of the Ron Brown Selection Committee and are expected to participate in several Selection Weekend activities.

TheWSU Office of the Provost is establishing a new scholarship program for membersof tribes that are signatory to a Memorandum of Understanding with WSU.  Signatory tribes include the following:  Confederated Tribes of the Salish andKootenai, Kootenai of Idaho, Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Nez Perce Tribe, ConfederatedTribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Confederated Tribes of the WarmSprings Reservation of Oregon, Yakama Nation, Colville Confederated Tribes, andthe Cowlitz Tribe. 

 

Twoawards are available per signatory tribe for incoming freshmen Fall 2013.  Each award is for $2000 per year renewablefor an additional three years if criteria are met.  One student will be selected from all applicantsto receive a $10,000 per year award, also renewable for three additional yearsif criteria are met.  MOU Tribal Scholarshiprecipients will be enrolled in UCOL 104, an introductory, student successcourse with a Tribal Nation Building Leadership Component.

Honoring the legacy and character of our nation’s 40th President, the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher education. The Leadership 1000 Scholarship is open to all students across the state who will be enrolling in college fall 2013 as a freshman, sophomore or junior and who meet the eligibility criteria listed on our website. Awards will range from $2,500 to $5,000. Some scholarships will be for one year only while others will be renewable for up to three additional years.

O Wines Opportunity for Success Scholarship

The O Wines Opportunity for Success Scholarship is a national scholarship that supports low-income, capable young women so they can achieve their greatest potential through education. 

Each scholarship is $5,000 per year for up to four years.

DigiPen Institute of Technology will offer two merit–based scholarships of $5,000 each to high-school seniors who have participated on a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) team during their junior or senior year. The Dick Larsen Scholarship will go to a past graduate of a Washington high school currently enrolled in a public or private college/university in this state.
The Herb Robinson Scholarship will go to a graduating Washington high school senior who is entering a public or private college/university in this state.

It's Always Something Writing Contest for grades 9-12  Deadline May 1,
We want to hear your story.  Have you survived cancer?  Have you watched a family member or friend deal with cancer?  What was it like to watch someone your own age go through cancer?

Graduating high school seniors or current students at a junior, community, or other accredited college who are pursuing a vocational degree are encouraged to apply for a $500 vocational scholarship from the Rotary Club of Pullman. Applicants must be residents of Whitman or Latah County and have a demonstrated commitment to community service.
