NON-MILITARY SERVICE WITH THE US GOVERNMENT
Peace Corps
The chance to make a real difference in other people's lives is the reason most Volunteers serve in the Peace Corps. Volunteers also have the chance to learn a new language, live in another culture, and develop career and leadership skills. The Peace Corps experience can enhance long-term career prospects whether you want to work for a corporation, a nonprofit organization, or a government agency. The Peace Corps can even open doors to graduate school. From practical benefits such as student loan deferment, career benefits like fluency in a foreign language, and the intangible benefits that come with making a difference in people's lives, there are a variety of rewards for the dedicated service of Volunteers. Rewards that last a lifetime. For more info www.peacecorps.gov
Americorps *NCCC
(National Civilian Community Corps)
This is a residential national service program for men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 who want to answer the President’s Call to Service. For 10 months, members serve in teams to meet urgent community needs in homeland security, disaster relief, the environment, and youth development. Teams work on projects throughout the country with non-profit programs, state and local agencies, and other community and faith-based groups.
Members live on one of five campuses (Denver, CO/Charleston, SC/Sacramento, CA/Perry Point, MD/Washington DC). Members receive training in CPR, first aid, leadership, team building and citizenship. In exchange for 10 months of service, members receive an education award of $4725 to help pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. During their service, members receive lodging, meals, uniforms, health benefits, loan forbearance and a living allowance of approximately $4000.
